Mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 7th when the first of three Howard County Farmers’ Markets will open. Howard County Farmers’ Markets will host three weekly markets this year on Wednesdays in Ellicott City at the Miller Library, Fridays in Columbia at Howard County General Hospital, and last but not least Sundays in Columbia at the Oakland Mills Village Center. Each market varies in size but all are guaranteed to meet your locally sourced desires.
The Howard County Farmers’ Markets set themselves apart from the competition in many ways. First, the markets are producer only. That means that when you buy something, like a beautiful, juicy tomato or hand woven scarf, you know that it came from that vendor, not his neighbor, not another farm—only from him. The Howard County Farmers’ Markets pride themselves on taking extra time to get to know local farmers and vendors to ensure that the community is getting the best product available.
Howard County Farmers’ Markets are also unique because of their small size. Some farmers markets can be overwhelming, loud, and crowded. However, these markets select only the best of the best producers. The markets believe in quality over quantity. Also, by offering numerous markets during the week, it cuts down on crowds so that the consumers can really enjoy the shopping experience and get to know the vendors.
You can find a wide variety of products at the market. They vary from baked goods to coffee to organic produce to even pizza! Some of these great vendors include Renata’s Tasty Bites, Love Dove Farms, Pong’s Orchard, and Great Harvest Bread Company to name a few.
The most important aspect of the Howard County Farmers’ Markets is being able to interact with the community. Shopping at the markets helps support local farmers and small businesses while also ensuring that you get everything you need at a great price.
